Gray Whales 
Season: Mid-December through April
Peak Months: January - February

Southbound Migration (Dec-Feb): Gray whales travel from Alaska to Baja California's warm breeding lagoons
Northbound Migration (Mar-Apr): Mothers return north with their newborn calves, often swimming closer to shore for protection
Population: Approximately 20,000 gray whales pass by San Diego annually!

Blue Whales 
Season: Mid-May through September
Peak Months: June-July
Purpose: Feed on abundant krill in California's nutrient-rich waters
Size: Largest animals on Earth - up to 100 feet long
Population: 2,000-3,000 blue whales feed off the California coast in summer
Signature: 30-foot spout visible from miles away

Humpback WhalesSeason: Year-round with peaks in spring and late summer/fall
Peak Months: March - April and August - November
Known For: Acrobatic breaching, tail slapping, and haunting songs
Migration: Pass through during journeys between feeding and breeding grounds
Behavior: Often provide spectacular displays for whale watchers

Fin Whales
Season: Year-round
Peak Months: June - October (summer/fall) and November - March
Size: Second-largest whale species after blue whales
Nickname: "Greyhounds of the sea" due to their speed and streamlined bodies
Viewing: Can be spotted year-round but more common in summer and fall

Year-Round Whale Watching
San Diego is one of the few places in the world where you can go whale watching year-round! While specific species have peak seasons, there's almost always a chance to see whales:
Winter/Spring (Dec-Apr): Gray whales dominate
Summer/Fall (Jun-Oct): Blue whales, fin whales, and humpbacks
Transitions (Apr-May, Oct-Nov): Mix of species possible

During whale watching tours, you could also often see:
